Digestion Methods

A fast, automated, accurate yet inexpensive method for measuring both Organic and Total Phosphorous (TP) has been urgently required in both the biological and environmental fields.

Indeed, measuring TP became mandatory under the EU Urban Wastewater Directive 91/271/EEC). Until now, the usual way of determining the phosphorus content of a sample has been first to digest that sample by heating it after having added strong acids; by oxidizing it with UV light having first added persulfate; or by closed-vessel microwave decomposition. These techniques are designed to convert to orthophosphate any phosphorus in the sample, which is then measured.  These methods have drawbacks; they can be dirty, hazardous, difficult to automate, not overly fast or accurate, and/or expensive.

Efficient Conversion To Orthophosphate

The TP+ quickly and efficiently converts all organic phosphate material as well as all polyphosphate species to orthophosphate; the digestion system is as efficient with the more difficult to oxidize organics, such as the pesticide Malathion®. The organic phosphorus may also be determined by the subtraction method.

Ion Chromatography

By combining an Ion Chromatograph (IC) with the novel digestion technique developed in Cambridge and recently patented, laboratories worldwide now have a powerful new tool - the TP+.

If an autosampler is included in the package, the TP+ can be fully automated and operated stand-alone, it may also be included as part of an analytical suite to measure TOC (Total Organic Carbon) and/or TN (Total Nitrogen), TS (Total Sulphur), as well as TP. These measurements may be made from one sample and one software package.

Measuring Other Elements

One of the benefits of using an IC with      Analytical Sciences' new digestion technique is that it makes possible the simultaneous measurement of many other elements, a truly powerful tool.
